Why does light cause tattoos to fade? John Swierk, Asst. Professor of Chemistry at Binghampton University is currently investigating the composition of commercial tattoo inks as well as the underlying photochemistry to understand how light causes tattoos to change and what underlying risks to human health those changes might generate.

“As Above, So Below” - The Alchemy of Indirect Oil Painting - Part 2: The Overpainting
Indirect oil painting is the scenic route to painting, in which the various processes are separated into distinct steps along the way, giving full attention to the purpose and potentials inherent in each stage. Indirect painting can be used for realistic and imaginal work alike, and allows for a great deal of creativity to be expressed at each step of the process. This course will be broken down into two basic stages: Underpainting and Overpainting, though the indirect painting process can ultimately be developed into far more complex and sophisticated avenues to suit the individual desires of the artist. This is not a completion-based course, but aims to provide a number of strategies for layering oil paint in a technically sound manner. -

Tattoo History with Aaron Deter-Wolf | Prehistoric Archaeologist
Aaron Deter-Wolf is a Prehistoric Archaeologist with the State of Tennessee's Division of Archaeology. His recent projects include excavations at a Late Pleistocene mastodon butchering site near Nashville, investigations of prehistoric shell-bearing sites along the Cumberland River, and research into the archaeological evidence for ancient tattooing. His research has been funded in part by grants from the National Science Foundation and the Tennessee Historical Commission.In addition to his work for the State of Tennessee, Aaron is an adjunct professor in the department of Sociology and Anthropology at Middle Tennessee State University, and a member of the curatorial team for the exhibition "Tattoo: Ancient Myths, Modern Meanings." He regularly gives presentations on his research, archaeology in general, and Tennessee's prehistoric past for university, school, community, and avocational interest groups.
